3DS and Wii U Online Play Update

As of April 8, 2024, Nintendo is going to shut down Online Play for all 3DS and Wii U games. If you’re new, you WILL NOT be able to earn achievements from online play if April 8, 2024 hits. In additon, you WILL ALSO NOT be able to compete or help players online. That could be WORSE than missing Wii U and 3DS DLCs from the eShop. If you have a 3DS and Wii U and already managed to obtain Online Play rewards in some of them earlier, then please don’t worry it. Here is a list of 3DS and Wii U games that have Online Play in a particular order.

#1: Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS

Rate of Impact: 25%

While you should have obtain the DLCs for both versions by March 2023, both versions have online play that will no longer be available. You will no longer be able to challenge online fighters or try out other online modes. However, you may get to keep the record of battles played and other records done online. What’s worse? If you haven’t joined online for the first time yet, better do it to unlock the Global Smash Rating before it’s too late. You can still have friends play with you in local wireless for 3DS gamers. If you have a Wii U version, players who have a paired Wii controller and 3DS version can still play in multiplayer. As long as you DON’T delete save data in either version, you can keep playing them anytime for a 100% Completion.

#2: Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)

Rate of Impact: 25%

While you should have obtain the DLCs for this game by March 2023, this racing game has online play that will no longer be available. You will no longer be able to challenge online racers and gain or lose points. You may, however, get to keep records in online play that you made so far. However, you can still have friends play with you in person while having at least one paired Wii controller and a Wii U Game Pad.

#3: Mario Kart 7 (3DS)

Rate of Impact: 25%

While online play will no longer be available, you can still challenge players in multiplayer via local wireless or download play. What’s going to happen is that you will no longer be able to earn enough online points to unlock a the Golden Standard Kart. If you still want the Golden Standard Kart, the only way to do it is to complete the coin criteria required to unlock them which will take forever. You can still tag people in Streetpass while playing this game, but there is a limit to that as well.

#4: Super Mario Maker + Super Mario Maker for 3DS

Rate of Impact: 64%

You should have downloaded the latest update for both versions. In Super Mario Maker Wii U original, you should’ve received all course events excluding the one with Shaun the Sheep. However, there are online features that you won’t be able to use after April 8, 2024. This will also make you lose your chance to get all Mario costumes exclusive in event courses that can be downloaded online for free. In addition, you won’t be able to play 100 Mario Challenge and all four difficulties. In fact, there are Mario Costumes to unlock exclusively in 100 Mario Challenge on a certain difficulty. You need to get those Mario Costumes before it’s too late.

How to Get All Mario Costumes Quicker from 100 Mario Challenge

As recommended, I’ll explain how to get non-amiibo Mario Costumes from 100 Mario Challenge difficulties step by step.

  1. First, you must require amiibo characters that unlock Mario Costumes from Expert 100 Mario Challenge for free. If you have any Mario and Zelda amiibos to scan, they will unlock their belonging Mario Costumes for free too. If you think you have the guts to get all amiibo Mario Costumes in Expert 100 Mario Challenge without any need of the amiibo, then disregard this step and go for them on the third step.
  2. Next, you must unlock all Mario Costumes from Easy and Normal 100 Mario Challenge.
  3. Then you’re going to have to unlock the rest of the non-amiibo Mario Costumes from Expert 100 Mario Challenge. Just worry about not running out of 100 Marios.
  4. Lastly, you must unlock at least one of 5 Mario Costumes from Super Expert 100 Mario Challenge.
    1. The only problem is that Super Expert difficulty is very tough for a couple reasons:
      1. Not many average players could get past even one level from the start.
      2. Super Expert difficulty is only meant to be played by flexible elite players, like Master Packattack04082 aka Matthew Flees who has managed to unlock all 5 Mario Costumes for completing it before.
    2. If you DARE have the guts and potential to get all 5 Mario Costumes in this difficulty, then go for it. Just remember these important following tips and tricks.
      1. To make this difficulty easier, you can try to clear all six levels in it before you run out of Marios.
      2. You need to be 88% good on your timing with Mario’s specific moves when surviving past courses with unpredictable situations. This includes tight and thorny speed runs and nearly impossible kaizo runs.
      3. As confident as you are, you might have to skip courses that you think are too tough for you to handle just to avoid taking risks of losing a majority of Marios.
      4. You need more than enough luck and hope that you’ll get all six proper courses that have even a little bit of comfortable obstacles to get past in each official game unharmed.

Once you complete this process, you’ll NEVER bother playing Expert or Super Expert difficulties again, not even after April 8, 2024.

Changes in 3DS Remake

The good news for the Nintendo 3DS remake is that it doesn’t have a Mario Costume list involved with 100 Mario Challenge. Your main worry for that remake is to play 100 Mario Challenge in all difficulties at least once. When you do, you may get to keep even a minority of the other online players’ made courses you have or have not cleared so far. The only problem, unlike the Wii U original, is that Super Expert difficulty is so annoying that it is not worth attempting to complete. There are no Mario Costumes involved in Super Expert 100 Mario Challenge in the 3DS remake anyway. If you manage to complete Super Expert 100 Mario Challenge on the 3DS for the first time, you’d be better off not playing that difficulty again.

What Now after completing 100 Mario Challenge Conditions?

As long as you DON’T delete save data from Wii U or 3DS versions, you can continue to play these games anytime. You can still create and play your own levels, but will no longer upload them on the Internet. As for the 3DS remake, you can still share levels with friends locally or StreetPass as long as it is appropriate and comfortable. If you already managed to get all Mario costumes exclusive in Event courses and 100 Mario Challenge Wii U version, don’t worry about it.

#5: Mario Golf: World Tour (3DS)

Rate of Impact: 20%

While you should’ve downloaded all DLC packs for this game by March 2023, there is an online feature worth of Tournaments. This online feature will no longer be present making you unable to unlock compete with other golfers online, even in Private Tournaments.

If you’re trying to unlock the opportunity get that one Mii Costume from online tournaments with SpotPass on, you’ve wasted your time. As far as I understand, the online tournaments in Castle Club are only available temporarily for you to get trophies and receive the Mii Costume regardless of your rank position until a specific deadline has reached. Despite that, you can get to keep the customizable Mii gears pieces earned from those temporary online tournaments even if you missed the tournaments.

You can still challenge golf players locally, but can’t do it via download play. You can still compete with golf players via StreetPass, but there is a limit to that. The large majority of Mii gear should not be impacted by the online play discontinuation. If you already managed to get that one Mii Costume via Castle Club online tournaments along with the their prized Custom Mii gear pieces early, you have no need to fear. As long as you DON’T delete this game’s save data, you can still continue playing this game anytime.

#6: Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash (Wii U)

Rate of Impact: 25%

While there are technically no DLCs in this game, this game has an online feature where you can challenge players in single or doubles. You can compete online players in any type of match. While the online feature will be discontinued on April 8, 2024, you can still play with friends in person as long as you have at least one paired Wii controller.

#7: Mario Tennis Open (3DS)

Rate of impact: 32%

While there are technically no DLCs in this game, this game has an online feature where you can challenge players in single or doubles. You can compete online players in any type of match and be able to unlock certain Mii Costumes. If the online features is discontinued on April 8, 2024, you’ll be unable to unlock four specific Mii Costumes by in online matches. If you already managed to get the Bowser Costumes and Wiggler Costume via online play early, you have no need to fear. As long as you DON’T delete one of the three save files you creating for yourself, you can still continue playing this game anytime to get a 100% completion. You can still challenge other players locally or via StreetPass, but there is a limit to that.

#8: Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS)

Rate of Impact: 50%

While this game does not have any DLCs, the online play will no longer be available in Scarescraper in this 3DS original game. You can still play Scarecscraper with other players locally or via download play. Multiplayer, including online, is ideal for Endless mode or any tower challenges in a harder difficulty. Despite this online discontinuation, it’s dangerous to hunt down ghosts in Scarescraper alone.

#9: Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games (Wii U)

Rate of impact: 35%

White this game does not have any DLCs, the online play allows you to play with others online. There is one Mii costume that you will kiss goodbye FOREVER if you don’t earn it via one online match before April 8, 2024. You can still get the majority of Mii costumes in this game to get a 100% completion. If you already managed to get one of the mii Costumes via one online match, then don’t worry about. As long as you don’t delete this game’s save data, you should be able to continue playing this game for a 100% completion at any time.

#10: Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (3DS)

Rate of impact: 10%

While this game does not have any DLCs, the online play allows you to play online with others in the Nintendo 3DS. Although the online play is going to go extinct after April 8, 2024, none of the badges mentioned in the mariowiki website are involved with online play. You can still get this game and get a 100% Completion on it, but shouldn’t have to worry about online play going away.

#11: Mario Sport Superstars (3DS)

While this game does not have any DLCs, the online play allows you to play with others online in a Nintendo 3DS as you progress through any sports available in the game. Although the online play is going to go away after April 8, 2024, I don’t think any of the collectibles are involved with online play. You can still play this game to get a 100% completion, but shouldn’t have to worry about online play being discontinued in it.

#12: Puzzle and Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition (3DS)

While this game only has a free version update that you should’ve downloaded from the Nintendo eShop by March 2023, the version update also has an online gimmick where you can see other player’s score online and compete against them. The gimmick will be gone after April 8, 2023. However, you can still play this game and beat in in a 100% completion that shouldn’t have anything to do with online play going extinct.

#13: Mario & Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move (3DS)

Rate of Impact: 32%

You will no longer be allowed to share levels with online players if the online feature is discontinued. The game itself can still be played as you can only play and solve in-game puzzles. You should’ve downloaded this by March 2023 as it will be redownloadable at anytime anyway.

#14: The Legend of Zelda: Tri-Force Heroes (3DS)

Rate of Impact: 30%

You will no longer be able to help online players or challenge them in this game. You will lose the opportunity to gain Hero points from online multiplayer by playing levels or challenges that you didn’t vote for or via “I can’t decide”. Hero points can be earned in order to unlock an upgrade for the Bear Minimum outfit. You should have also downloaded a free version update by March 2023 to make it happen. Even if online discontinuation closes your Hero Points opportunity on impact, you can still get them by just clearing levels in multiplayer via local wireless or download play.

#15: Hyrule Warriors (Wii U) + Hyrule Warriors Legends (3DS)

Rate of Impact: 50%

These two games have an online play that enable you to help Networks Link on the Internet. While you should’ve obtained all DLCs for both versions by March 2023, online play will be discontinued in April 8, 2024. You WILL NOT be able to obtain a Big Bro Medal in both versions if that happens. If you already obtained it in both versions earlier, then don’t worry about it. You can still earn this medal by helping your friends’ Links as long as you shared friend codes with them. In the Legends version, you can still help other Links via StreetPass, but there is a limit to it. You can still borrow Fairy Rental Skills from local wireless players who have this game. You can continue playing both versions anytime for a 100% completion as long as you DON’T delete any data.

#16: Kirby Battle Royale (3DS)

Rate of Impact: 5%

While you must have downloaded the update version by March 2023, there is an online feature to compete other players. You will no longer use this feature after April 8, 2024. However, you don’t have to play Online Battles to reach 100% Completion. That being said, don’t let that impact you and your game. There are other Kirby 3DS games that support multiplayer, but none of them support online play.

#17: Kid Icarus Uprising: (3DS)

Rate of Impact: 10%

This game has an online feature that you use in Together Mode where you challenge other players. The online discontinuation may impact this multiplayer game, but you can still play multiplayer using local wireless with a friend nearby.

#18: Metroid Prime: Federation Force (3DS)

Rate of Impact: 10%

This game has an online feature where you can play with up to 4 online players for sci-fi shooting fun. Even if the online play discontinuation stops this feature on impact, you can still challenge other players locally.

#19: Super Street Fighter 4 3D Edition

Rate of Impact: 15%

This game has an online feature where you challenge online fighters. You will not be able to play this feature if it is discontinued. You can still play solo and with other players locally.

#20: Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed (3DS/Wii U)

Rate of Impact: 30%

While there is an update version that must have been downloaded by March 2023, both versions have online features where you can race against other players online. The online feature will not be playable any longer if April 8, 2024 hits. You can still play these games solo or via local multiplayer. As for the 3DS version, it only has a rather cheap bonus pass that you must have bought and downloaded by March 2023.

#21: Nintendo Badge Arcade (3DS)

Rate of Impact: 88%

While you should have downloaded this game for free by March 2023, this game will also be completely shut down after April 8, 2024. You will not be able to obtain any more badges when this happens. Luckily, you DON’T have to get all badges for a 100% completion. That being said, try collecting a minimum number of badges possible before the online service ends. That way, you may have plenty of badges to customize in your 3DS home menu.

#22: All Pokémon Games for 3DS and Wii U

Rate of Impact: 88%

While one of these games have DLC that you should have obtained by March 2023, all of the games will no longer have online play if online service discontinues. These games can still be played normally as a majority of Pokémon can still be captured. You can still use Poké Transporter and Pokémon Bank to transfer whatever Pokémon you captured in any other games in this series before April 8, 2024 hits. Pokémon Tournament for Wii U is also one game that has online features that will no longer be playable after April 8, 2024. The Wii U game itself can still be played offline.

#23: Fire Emblem Fates (3DS)

Rate of Impact: 40%

While you should have downloaded all DLC in this game, online features will no longer be avaiable after April 8, 2024. You can still play it with other players locally. The big catch to save data on your SD Card is that you can ONLY have either Birthright or Conquest, NOT both. The other path that is not physically obtained should have still be obtained alongside the Third Path and other DLC packs by March 2023. Fire Emblem Echoes and Fire Emblem Awakening also have multiplayer. One of them can be played both locally and in StreetPass, while the other is only via StreetPass.

#24: Animal Crossing: New Leaf + Welcome amiibo (3DS)

Rate of Impact: 75%

This game has online play that enables you to visit other towns in the train station or Dream Suite. You can also meet online players at Club Tortimer. You WILL NOT be able to obtain dream badges or Club Tortimer furniture if the online play is discontinued. In addition, you won’t be able to convince New Leaf hackers to give you a horde of Bells or other rare items online. If you already managed to obtain all dream badges earlier, then don’t worry about it.

Also, if you purchased the Club Tortimer app and then visited Club Tortimer once early, then don’t worry about it either. Even if further Club Tortimer visits are discontinued on impact, you can still get Club Tortimer items in single player. As for town traveling, you only have the option to use local wireless and have shared Friends codes with a friend.

You can still use StreetPass to tag with players that have this game to obtain badges involved with it. If you still want Distributed items or items outside of your game’s regional version, you’ll have to locally join a player’s town to get them (if that other player has it).

You can continue to play this game or its remake at anytime as long as you DON’T choose “Rebuild the Town” in the loading screen. Even if rebuilding the town in Welcome amiibo gives you an extreme amount of bells transferred to your new town, DON’T YOU DARE DO IT!

#25: Xenoblade Chronicles X (Wii U)

Rate of Impact: 64%

This game has online play where you can join online players’ missions and have them join you. While you should have obtained all free DLC packs for this game by March 2023, you won’t be able to use the online feature if it’s discontinued. In addtion, there are some achievements that you will no longer be able to earn from online play. If you manage to get at least one or two achievements from online play earlier, then don’t worry about it. However, if you delete this game’s sava data and play again from scratch or if you’re new to playing this game at the last moment, then earning online achievements before April 8, 2024 would be pointless. All achievements obtained from online play and Miiverse were technically optional to obtain for long, yet different, periods of time to get a true 100% Completion anyway.

#26: Splatoon (Wii U)

Rate of Impact: 88%

While this game only has a version update that can be downloaded, there are online features where you compete with other players for an ink blast of fun. The only games it has for online multiplayer are Turf War, Splat Zones, Tower Control, Rainmaker, and Clam Blitz. The modes that will no longer be playable after April 8, 2024 are Regular Battle, Ranked Battle, Squad Battle, Private Battle, and Splatfest Battle. The only local multiplayer mode left unimpacted is the Batte Dojo. You can still play Octo Valley mode.
